According to a recent press release, you should pop a few prunes to ease constipation.
A clinical trial was published in Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics that focused on a group of forty constipated individuals. Some in the group were given 50 grams of prunes twice daily (containing six grams of fiber), and some were given one tablespoon of psyllium in water twice each day (containing six grams of fiber). The study participants recorded their symptoms and stools in a diary. The number of complete spontaneous bowel movements per week as well as stool consistency improved significantly with prunes when compared to psyllium. Global constipation symptoms also improved more with prunes versus psyllium.
Looks like you should stock up on prunes if you're feeling constipated! What are your favorite ways to treat constipation? Would you be willing to give prunes a try?
