I’m a huge proponent of flushing toxins from your body—and
if you lose weight due to your cleansing efforts, even better!
However, there is one cleansing diet that is unsafe, and that’s the Master Cleanse Diet.
The Master Cleanse Diet is a liquid diet consisting of water, lime or lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup. The diet consists of drinking lemonade that is spiked with maple syrup and cayenne pepper up to twelve times daily. The participant is also encouraged to drink a glass of salt water and/or a glass of herbal laxative tea once or twice a day.
Right away, the issues with this diet are clear to me. While this diet is said to detoxify your body, flushing out the unwanted toxins and leaving your digestive tract healthier, it seriously lacks nutritional value. While I completely support using cleansing as a way to lose weight, I am not a supporter of a type of diet such as this that clearly lacks a suitable amount of calories.
